How to Write a CV From Scratch
Start with a blank page and build a CV that makes your relevant experience easy to understand. This practical guide covers structure, wording and checks for UAE job seekers.
Start with the job description
Copy the target job title, core duties and essential skills into your notes before writing. Use that list to decide which experience deserves space, but describe it truthfully rather than repeating keywords without evidence.
Build a clear CV structure
Place your name and contact details at the top, followed by a focused summary, experience, education and relevant skills. Add certifications, projects, volunteering or languages only when they strengthen the application.
Write a focused professional summary
State your role or field, strongest relevant strengths and the kind of position you want in two or three lines. Replace vague claims such as hard-working professional with specific value you could explain in an interview.
Turn duties into evidence
For each role, include employer, job title, location and dates, then use concise bullets beginning with action verbs. Explain what you did, how you did it and what changed when possible; use figures only when you can verify them.
Make it readable and review it
Choose clear headings, consistent dates, readable spacing and a file type requested by the employer. Open the exported file, check selectable text, and proofread names, dates, contact details and job-specific terminology before sending.
Questions before you start?
How long should a CV be?
Use the space needed to show relevant evidence clearly while removing repetition. For many roles, a concise one- or two-page CV is a practical starting point; follow the employer’s instructions.
Can I use the same CV for every job?
Keep a master CV, then adapt the summary, skills and strongest evidence to each suitable vacancy. A template cannot replace accurate, relevant content.
Should I include a photo on a UAE CV?
Only when the employer or application specifically requests one, or when it is a clear norm for the particular role and market. Otherwise prioritise experience and easy-to-check contact details.
