Should You Send Your CV as Word or PDF?
There is no universal winner between Word and PDF. The safest choice depends on the employer’s instructions, application channel and whether the layout must stay consistent.
Start with employer instructions
Check the advert, application form and email instructions before choosing a file type. If the employer asks for DOCX, PDF, plain text or another format, follow that request.
When Word is the better choice
Use DOCX when an employer, recruiter or portal specifically requests an editable document. Keep the layout simple so headings, dates and bullets remain easy to interpret.
When PDF is the better choice
Use PDF when accepted and you want spacing, page breaks and fonts to appear as intended. Open the exported file and confirm that text can be selected and copied.
A practical UAE application rule
Read each posting carefully rather than assuming every employer uses the same process. Keep both versions ready and use the exact format named by the employer.
Make either format easy to review
Use standard headings, readable fonts and a professional filename such as Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf. Keep essential information out of images and check the file on another device.
Questions before you start?
Is PDF or Word better for an ATS?
Neither is guaranteed to work identically with every system. Follow accepted-format instructions, use text-based files and avoid image-only CVs.
Should I email a PDF CV in the UAE?
Use PDF when the recipient accepts it and no different format is requested. If a recruiter asks for Word, send DOCX.
Should I keep both versions?
Yes. Maintain one accurate master document, export a checked PDF and keep DOCX available for portals or recruiters that need it.
